How to Pose for Photos When You Hate Posing

Almost everyone who books with me says some version of the same thing: "I’m so awkward in photos." If that’s you, here’s the honest truth about how to pose for photos. You don’t really have to. You just need something to do.

Walk

Walking is the easiest pose there is. Walk toward me, walk away, look back over your shoulder. Your body already knows how to do it, so it looks natural.

Give your hands a job

Hands are where most people get stuck. Hold your cap, fix your stole, put a hand in a pocket, touch your hair. Anything is better than letting them hang there.

Sit down

Sitting on steps, a ledge, or a bench takes the pressure off right away. Lean forward a little, put your elbows on your knees, and relax.

Look anywhere but the camera

Some of the best photos happen when you’re looking off to the side, at the ground, or at whoever you brought with you. It takes the "say cheese" feeling out of it.

Laugh at yourself

Do a little kick. Spin. Toss the cap and miss it. The outtakes are almost always the photos people end up loving most.

And let me do the work

You won’t be standing there wondering what to do next. I’ll tell you where to go, what to do with your hands, and when to look up. My job is to make you comfortable, not to make you perform.

If you’ve been putting off photos because you hate posing, I promise it’s easier than you think. Take a look at my graduation portraits and senior portraits pages, or see how relaxed it gets in Kendall and her friends’ group session.
